Manufacturing Process

Black Stone Pottery : Come from Longpi Village, Ukhrul District, Manipur, in the North East of India. Pottery is made of two composition of raw materials â 1. Weather Rock/Serpentinite( a soft dark greenish rock ) and clay ( dark brownish â a stiff sticky earth ) use in the ratio of 3:2 . They are hammered ( make powder) and mixed with water to form a dough ( clay formation ). The dough is flattened out on a wooden board/plate by using different thickness of wooden & bamboo scale and moulded by hand. The object are leveled and incised by skilled artisans with the help of bamboo blade, spike & stick. Their surface is further polished with a smooth flat and oval shape stone. It is hard and dried, then they are fire in a kiln for 4-5 hours at the temperature 750 â 950 degree centigrade. There after, they are taken out from the kiln and covered with leave ( local plant- â Chilon â Na â ) before the temperature is vanished. The smoke of the leave lends a black shade (colour) to the object. Then the well polish ( Pottery ) will be make design with cane and bamboo stripe, stick and coil and then the finished product is ready for marketing.
